A Day in the Life of …….

Good Food Ireland started a series of blog posts recently interviewing some of their members for their “Day in the Life of …” series.

Ruth Healy of Urru Culinary Store in Bandon and Peter Ward of Country Choice in Nenagh were the first two candidates and I was the third. You can read all about me here!!

The latest person is Eimantas Zvirblis, the fishmonger at Donnybrook Fair’s outlet in Malahide!

My one answer that raised a few eyebrows was to the following question:

Are You A Technophile or Technophobe?

I think I was always ahead of the posse in many ways when it came to using technology for the business. Ummera had a website long before many other businesses did. It was a great tool for communicating what we were doing to our customers, and keeping in touch with people in an inexpensive and efficient way. So I would have kept up with buying the latest computer technology and smartphones from that point of view, because there’s no doubt they do have a place. But I must admit these days it’s all gone beyond my original needs! I don’t have the time or the brains anymore to devote to learning new platforms. I am happy with what I have now and don’t feel the need to wait for the next iPhone to come out!

I am, of course, waiting impatiently for the new iPhone 7 so please disregard the last sentence! I’ve been to Cork, Bandon and Clonakilty trying to get one. Where are they?

Chrome and Ummera

Bit techie this post, but I installed the new Google Chrome browser just now!

So far so good! Certainly fast and clean.

Like the fact that it will create application shortcuts on the desktop for things like gmail and google calender.

No doubt more to follow, but I am heading out the door to the centre of all matters food for the next few days, Waterford, the National Organic Food Conference and Terra Madre Ireland.

Hope to see you all there!

Ummera en francais

Arnaud and myself have almost finished converting our ordering pages into French to run alongside the English version.

OsCommerce which powers our ordering pages has the facility to use several different languages, but naturally any amendments we have made since installing osCommerce have all had to be checked and translated into French – a tedious task especially having to do battle with the vagaries of php language! Still we have succeeded,

One last thing to do is to work out how to enable visitors to the site to be able to select their language. A rather basic need of course!

In the meantime, any keen linguists out there who would like to send in corrections and suggestions please go to:

French Version of Ummera Orders

English Version (default)

We still have the main pages of the website to translate …………..!

Ummera at Cork Airport

Dashing out the door to do a couple of days In-Store tasting at Cork Airport in the Duty Free Shop – so if passing through on the way to the sun (or rain!) today or tomorrow, come and say hello!

We will also have some cards from LouderVoice which will show you how to send instant reviews by SMS of anything you want! See the left hand side bar of this page for some examples…..

The cleverness of it all!

In February RTE’s Nationwide included a piece on Ummera, and I have been thinking about embedding it onto our website, but with no joy.

However, this morning whilst scanning through my Google Reader feeds for interesting bits, Damian Mulley gave me the solution with a  link to Jazz Biscuit who has created some code to embed RTE’s Realplayer clips.

So now, thanks to the Irish blogosphere, I have the solution and the clip can be viewed directly from www.ummera.com

Popups and Gmail

I am using [tag]gmail[/tag] on both [tag]Firefox[/tag] and [tag]IE7[/tag].

They both have a Popup problem! I get a message saying “Grrr! a [tag]popup blocker [/tag]may be preventing Gmail from opening the page. If you have a popup blocker, try disabling it to open the window”
I have disabled popups (and created an exception for mail.google.com) but it keeps occurring.

Anyone any ideas??
