Ummera news update...

November 2003

The year 2003 was an international year for Ummera! It began with an exciting fact-finding visit to New York in January, courtesy of a bargain ticket from Aer Lingus and encouragement from Enterprise Ireland. One of the highlights of this marketing exercise was giving a presentation to the New York Slow Food Convivium about the Irish Smoked Wild Atlantic Salmon Presidium (ISWAS).

The new USA FDA regulations regarding Food Imports under the Bioterrorism Act come into operation on December 12th. We hope that these won’t hinder our deliveries of Ummera Smoked Salmon to the USA, and we will be accepting orders from you to the USA as normal. However, if delivery can be made before that date it might be wiser and we will ship beginning week commencing December 8th.

We were delighted to welcome many visitors to the smokehouse from far afield (including groups from Norway’s Arctic Circle and The Netherland's Brabant district); some were discovering Ummera for the first time, others were old friends!

In October, at the invitation of Slow Food, we participated in the "Aux Origines du Gout" Fair in Montpellier, France along with the other members of the ISWAS Presidium; at the beginning of November, I was to be found manning a stall at the Borough Market in London with other members of the Fuchsia Group from West Cork.

We were delighted to be awarded with a Certificate of Merit in the Food Safety/Environmental Best Practice Award in the National Food & Drink Industry Awards, in July 2003. Following this, and in acknowledgement of our reputation for "green initiatives", we were asked to make a presentation at the "Green Business is Real Business" seminar in Kinsale, Co. Cork in September.

Recently, the Guild of Fine Food Retailers (UK) honoured Ummera with Medals in their Great Taste Awards 2003; Silver for our Irish Smoked Organic Salmon and a Bronze for our Irish Smoked Wild Salmon in their respective classes.

In the near future, our web site, especially the ordering facility, will be upgraded; this should make it simpler and will make ordering a wider range of products possible. But don't delay in getting your order in for Christmas. Remember our Smoked Wild Salmon does freeze very well so take delivery earlier rather than later - please! .
